  • The port of Callao was not founded by the Spaniards, but it is a natural port that had been used since pre-Inca times. Due to its location and excellent characteristics, it later became the main port of Spanish America during the colonial era.

  • The submarine Abtao was launched into the water on October 27, 1953 in the port of New London, Connecticut, U.S.A. and baptized with the name of BAP TIBURON. Later it was changed its name in Peru to BAP ABTAO in homage to one of the most important battles in the history of our country.

  • The Real Felipe fortress was built to defend the port of Callao from the constant attacks of pirates as renowned as the Englishman Francis Drake and the Dutch corsair Jacobo Clerck nicknamed L'Hermite.

  • Between the years of 1850 and 1851 the Lima-Callao railway began to operate, the first in South America, which left the same port and went up the Colonial avenue to San Martin Square itself.

  • The port of Callao currently mobilizes almost 1.5 million containers per year.
